hmmmmm, I have a problem with this one!

From what location was this series of pictures taken and then stitched together because it wasn't from earth. When observing the moon crossing the face of the sun from earth, the whole sun is obscured, not like in the video above. Maybe it might be some other celestial body but I don't think its the moon!!!

This is a picture of what it should look like!

What are people opinions?

You've got a good head on your shoulders. You are right, this photo series wasn't taken from Earth and was actually planned out long in advance. The images were taken by the SOHO solar observation satellites.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that earlier. At first I thought it was inaccurate as well, but I went to NASA's website and looked it up.

Just has a quick read of the Soho pdf fact file. It had to say the following.

...........................................

Orbit
SOHO moves around the Sun in step with the Earth, by slowly orbiting around the First Lagrangian Point (L1), where the combined gravity of the Earth and Sun keep SOHO in an orbit locked to the Earth-Sun line. The L1 point is approximately 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth (about four times the distance of the Moon), in the direction of the Sun. There, SOHO enjoys an uninterrupted view of our daylight star.

................................................

So if SOHO is locked in position between the earth and sun at the L1 point, which is four times the distance of the moon from the earth. When exactly is the moon going to get in the way?

I did a little more digging! The image was captured by the Stereo-B observatory!

.......................................

On Feb. 25, 2007 there was a transit of the Moon across the face of the Sun - but it could not be seen from Earth. This sight was visible only from the STEREO-B spacecraft in its orbit about the sun, trailing behind the Earth

STEREO = Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory
.........................................

For more information have a look at their website is has lots of impressive images on it.

Bah, it's too early. I meant stereo but said SOHO. Sorry!

And it seems like I need to be the one that makes it a link. Just message me if I ever miss a link you try to post.
